The mesmerizing sea life of the Virgin Islands stands as a testament to the natural wonders of these islands. In the tropical waters that surround these islands, a vibrant and diverse marine life exists.
This remarkable underwater realm has established the British Virgin Islands as an ideal destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. Personally, I love grabbing my mask and snorkel to enjoy the spectacle of life just a few steps from the shoreline.
Attempting to capture the entirety of the BVIs' ocean life would take pages. Nevertheless, we want to show you just a glimpse of one of our favorite parts of the BVI!
The Major Kinds of Marine Life You Might Find
One appeal of the British Virgin Islands lies in the ability to explore the diverse marine life thriving in the crystal-clear waters around these islands. From vibrant corals to an array of reef fish, and even occasional sightings of dolphins and whales, the marine life of the British Virgin Islands is a must-see.
This remarkable marine life is readily accessible to anyone! There is no need to go very deep to see all of the colorful reef fish and coral formations. One of the best parts is that you can enjoy the BVI waters year-around. Here are a few of the major types of marine life in the BVI!
Sea Turtles
Fish
Rays
Coral
Whales and Dolphins
1) Sea Turtles
In the waters of the Virgin Islands, several species of sea turtles can be found, including the Hawksbill, Green, and Leatherback. These majestic creatures frequent the islands to nest on secluded sandy beaches. Our kids love spotting a sea turtle and then jumping in the water to get a better look. We have been able to get up close to these amazing creatures!
Given that they are considered endangered, all sea turtles are strictly protected by law. Encountering a sea turtle while swimming is a thrilling experience. During my recent excursion, I was fortunate enough to snorkel with a sea turtle. It was amazing to be up close and personal with these graceful creatures.
2) Reef Fish
Among the approximately 400 species of fish inhabiting the waters, like the striped Sergeant Majors. Within the multicolor realm of the reef ecosystem, a vibrant ensemble of marine life dazzles the observer.
If you snorkel around the reefs, you may be able to say hello to relatives of Nemo and Dory! Clownfish and blue tangs love playing in the anemones and coral. Damselfish, angel fish, brightly-colored parrotfish, spotted butterflyfish, pufferfish, and seahorses are just a few of the many types of reef fish you may find.
Anegada lobsters, excellent at camouflage, conceal themselves within the coral formations. Nudibranchs and other worm-like creatures, sea slugs, diaphanous moon jellyfish, and tarpon, a delectable delicacy, also frequent these waters.
While you’re sailing, you may be able to witness a spectacular school of flying fish keeping up with the catamaran by flying on top of the waves!
3) Rays
We have seen a few different kinds of rays while vacationing in the BVI. Our favorite was an instance where we saw an Eagle ray, with its bright white spots and triangular wings, jump nearly ten feet out of the water! These rays are not only harmless, but they are also always wearing a smile! Their mouth is naturally shaped into a smile that helps them eat shrimp, crabs, mollusks, and other little animals that may be crawling around at the bottom of the ocean.
On a rare occasion, it is possible to see manta rays during their migration route. These gentle giants are harmless. If you spot one, you may be the luckiest BVI traveler!
4) Coral Are Animals Too!
The vibrant coral reefs encircling the Virgin Islands rank among the most diverse ecosystems globally, teeming with an astonishing array of sea life, from microscopic organisms to majestic sea turtles and colossal groupers.
Within the waters of the islands thrive dozens of coral varieties, encompassing both hard and soft forms. These corals develop as colonies of small, soft polyps, each equipped with a mouth-like opening bordered by tentacles for nutrient absorption from the surrounding water. The living coral tissue gradually encases and shapes the underlying calcium-based skeleton, a process that unfolds slowly, typically adding a mere half to four inches per year.
Soft corals, distinguished by their spongy framework, often exhibit a flexible, plant-like appearance. Each coral species adopts a unique growth pattern, with many deriving their names from their distinctive shapes. You may see the beautiful sea fans that look like a flat tree!
5) Whale and Dolphins
For those intrigued by the prospect of swimming alongside dolphins, Dolphin Discovery offers visitors the chance to do so at Oil Nut Bay. Another option is whale-watching which is an experience that you can enjoy during their migration in the winter.
These examples merely scratch the surface of the abundant marine life awaiting discovery in the British Virgin Islands. The Baths, situated on Virgin Gorda, and The Dogs, located near its beaches, stand out as prime snorkeling destinations for encountering diverse sea creatures.
Nestled within the secluded Oil Nut Bay resort community lies an idyllic retreat for those eager to marvel at the mesmerizing underwater world and explore the neighboring islands of the BVI.
